Printable SOAP Bible Study & Prayer

What is the SOAP Bible study method?

The SOAP method is the perfect way for kids to process and internalize what they've learned after Bible reading and discussion.

Why use the SOAP method?

  • Clarify and Remember: The structured format helps kids articulate important and meaningful ideas. By writing down their observations and applications, they're more likely to remember and implement what they learned.
  • Develop Notetaking Skills: With the experience the SOAP method gives kids in writing down important ideas and discussion points, kids will become better note-takers during church sermons.
  • Create a Devotional Journal: Completed SOAP sheets can become a snapshot of your child's spiritual journey by collecting them in a folder to create a personal journal. Kids can be encouraged to see how far they've come in reading Scripture and having their prayers answered.
  • Bridge to Independent Bible Reading: The SOAP method helps kids go from passively reading the Bible on their own to actively engaging with it. It teaches them to notice things, think them through, consider how they apply to their own life, and pray about them.

Why Discussion is More Important than a Worksheet

The SOAP method is a great tool, but it's not a teacher. While this worksheet provides a helpful structure, it can't replace the spiritual guidance of a parent. Children need your perspective and guidance as they learn to navigate and interpret Scripture.

When you sit down to discuss the Bible, you're doing a job that a worksheet can never do.

  • Help Your Kids Love the Word: When you talk about the Bible, your kids will see your face light up. And excitement is contagious! When they see you get excited about making connections, they'll begin to realize that Bible reading isn't a chore—it's a treasure hunt. It's fun!
  • Ensure Accurate Knowledge: Through discussion, you can guide your children into what you believe, rather than hoping they understand Scripture correctly on their own.
  • Prepare Your Kids for the World: The world is going to ask our kids tough questions. If they've only done worksheets or surface-level devotionals, they might be caught off-guard. By tackling the challenging topics of the Bible together, you're preparing your kids to stand firm when their faith is questioned.
  • Develop Deep Understanding: Discussions naturally develop a deeper understanding of Scripture. Active processing, hearing multiple perspectives, and making connections to their own lives will make the Bible real and personal to your kids.

By starting together with conversation, the SOAP sheet transitions from a fill-in-the-blank chore to a meaningful summary of a deep conversation.
